Eating out in Malaysia
Street food markets come alive at night, once the temperatures dip slightly, and it’s here during your holiday in Malaysia where you’ll get to try some of the most delicious dishes. Sample national delicacies such as nasi lemak, which is fragrant coconut rice, served with sambal, anchovies, and peanuts.
You’ll also see hawkers serving assam laksa, which is a thick noodle soup, and roti canai, which has an Indian influence, and is a flatbread served with dhal and curry.
Alternatively, if you have a sweet tooth, you have to try cendol, which is made with coconut, milk, and a palm sugar syrup, and can be served hot or cold.
Of course, it’s not all street food - you’ll find fine dining restaurants and rooftop cocktail bars nestled on the streets of Kuala Lumpur, as well as charming beach shacks on the likes of Langkawi, all serving a combination of traditional Malaysian and international food.
Sights to see in Malaysia
There are so many things to see and do on our Malaysia holidays, it can be hard knowing where to start! Of course, the beaches are a must, and we particularly love Langkawi, which consists of 99 islands with a range of golden shores to choose from.
As the capital, Kuala Lumpur, also known as KL, is influenced by a fusion of different cultures and cuisines. You can visit colonial Merdeka Square where Malaysia's independence from Britain was declared, then see neighbouring Chinatown and Little India. If you're looking to soak up city life, then look no further than the Golden Triangle area. With plenty of shops, restaurants and nightlife, you’ll never be bored on your holidays in Malaysia! Of course, you can't miss seeing the iconic Petronas Towers, which are the tallest Twin Towers in the world - the skybridge that links the two together boasts unrivalled views of the capital.
With a UNESCO World Heritage status, George Town is another exciting city to visit on your Malaysia holidays. Both food and architecture represent the city's Asian and European influences. Known as the food capital of Malaysia, there are so many dishes to try including Penang Laksa, Roti Canai and Hokkien Mee.
If you have time, then you should head to Sarawak, in Borneo, where you can be at one with nature. Home to both tribal cultures and some of the world's most diverse ecosystems, you can explore mangrove swamps, trek in one of the oldest rainforests on earth, discover complex cave systems and meet orangutans in their natural habitat.
Shopping in Malaysia
There are lots of opportunities to shop on one of our holidays in Malaysia! KL boasts the best range of luxury shopping malls in the country, which are home to designer and international brands - some of the best include the Pavilion, and Suria KLCC, which is nestled right by the iconic Petronas Towers.
If you’re looking for some souvenirs to take back for family, friends, or yourself, then make sure you pick up some dodol, which is a chewy sweet treat; or shop for spices, white coffee, and Cameron tea - all of which are available to buy at shops and stalls across the country.
